Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a colorless gas and the simplest ether to be derived from a variety of sources such as natural gas, coal and biodiesel, and used in the aerosol and fuel industries. Initial consumption of DME was previously limited to the aerosol industry where it was used as a propellant, but it later emerged as a substitute for traditional fuels such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), diesel and gasoline due to its high calorific value and clean burning qualities. DME is frequently used in the residential sector as town gas (cooking gas) after blending with LPG as it has all the safety features required for use in the residential sector. Its consumption in the automotive sector is yet to start commercially.
Global DME demand has increased tremendously over the last decade, largely due to China’s growing energy needs which account for more than 90% of global DME capacity. Demand for alternative clean fuel to support rapid industrialization is driving the DME industry in China. The Chinese government is closely monitoring trends in the DME market and taking necessary steps to stop any overcapacity or irregular blending. The new standards set by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) has stipulated the mass fraction of DME in DME-LPG blend to be less than 20% by weight.
